Although extreme mast bumping
might explain the MR separating from the aircraft (indeed, if this happened - it's almost impossible to tell from that one grainy photo), it doesn't explain the 'lots of smoke'. Given the topology and weather, I'd be very surprised if mast bumping had anything to do with it.
