I'd say there's no harm in having a 'proper' degree - that'll be engineering btw
Basil - left school at 15 but did an an apprenticeship as fitter/turner/gas welder then 3yrs as seagoing marine engineer. S1 did Materials at Imperial, decided RR were taking the p1ss with a graduate engineer offer of £13k (in 1995) and went to the City which valued the mental and academic assets displayed by engineers.
Suffice to say, he's better off than most of the pilots I know - think Cathay A-scaler
