A civilian Chinook was lost near the Shetlands because of this - wasn't the shaft, but the forward gearbox corroded and failed (from memory, correct me if I'm wrong, someone). See

And as for speed, RAF Chinooks in Afghanistan have been known to outrun their Apache escorts if they need to get back to the medical facilities at Bastion in a hurry.
