Well, I spent the first 10 years flying heavy metal in the military.
I was taught to calculate the 80 knot and VR speeds as distance covered, since all the military airfields had distance markers adjacent to the runway.
I always felt that was a simple and very effective way to check takeoff performance, and surprised when I changed to civil flying, that there was both no distance markers, and no method provided to calculate it anyway!

After 25 years and 14K hours, I still miss that reassuring check during takeoff.
