Meteors leave a plasma trail these tend linger a bit longer than the meteor itself, colour I suppose will depend of the mineral make up of the object, ie ,a greenish tinge probably means they contain some copper.
Incidently hate to be pendantic, but meteorite is something that you can pick up, meteors don't become meteroites utill they hit the deck.
