Changing to the driver you recommended seems to have solved my problem. Unfortunately that driver was second in the list presented by Mint ... the Postscript driver was the one with "recommended" after it, not the Brother HL-2140 Foomatic/hpijs-pcl5e you alerted me to.

PPRuNe wins again.
