Dunno about on smaller things although I assume it is the same - on the 757 LPC / OPC you can use the automatics at all times at the discretion of the examiner, apart from
i) Single engine GA
ii) Single engine Landing
iii) Single engine ILS
We normally end up doing hand flown ils to GA then a non precision with automatics to a manual se landing.
Oh and autos are normally put in after clean up after EFATO.
