There have been some interesting views in this thread (and some very bitter ones), but I think it's important to remember that the Club can't be all things to all people. That said, they do try by having different dress rules for different rooms - you can sit in the Running Horse all evening in jeans if you want or, if you're entertaining guests or just like wearing ties, you can use the Cowdray Room. Seems fine to me.
Of course, with so many serving and ex-serving members, we're almost guaranteed never to be happy with it!!! Personally, I've managed to break years of programming now and am very contented with the Club.
Just enjoy and don't worry about it too much.
