Gordy, our well known fire fighter, provided this month’s calendar photo which was taken by Robert Barnes.
"LaFawnduh", also known as N1957Z or Helitack 57Z, is Gordy’s L4 with TRACS and was operating on the Blackrock 2 fire in Blackrock Canyon just south east of Pocatello Idaho, on the Caribou Targhee National Forest. The fire was started people firing guns at a target and was contained at 168 acres. There were numerous retardant drops by Convair tankers and SEATs.
From Gordy’s records it started around 14:00 MDT and was contained about 6 hours later. He did 31 bucket drops on it, mostly along the south flank assisting with a burnout conducted by his crew. It was the first time they used their portable "heliwell", photo beneath the calendar links.
