Because (a) so much of their work is 'invisible' compared to the other services and (b) no one else will.
As a typical example, this recent photo in a national daily shows Cheryl Cole surrounded by Royal Navy personnel beside a Royal Navy Sea King in Afghanistan. It's obvious to you and me from the type of salute but the picture is captioned
'Star salutes with brave troops' and
the accompanying article doesn't contain a single reference to the Naval Service although it mentions both the Army and the RAF.
