This is all very exciting, but in 30 years of operational ATC I never had to do anything like it.

It may have been useful in the 1950s, but most ATCOs today use radar. Sorry....'situational displays'.
I suspect the 'exercises' are generated by folks with little or no 'hands-on' experience as speeds in aviation are usually expressed in knots.
