Belgian variant: unless explicitly published otherwise, overhead join at circuit + 500, check signals area, then join downwind (which implicitly means "beginning of downwind") while descending to published circuit altitude. Many will join middle of downwind, though, and some fields have this explicitly published, EBGB for one.
