Well, I was hoping that it would actually depend on ability and everyone had the same chance.
However, from the FAQ that has now been posted it appears that the first stage is not purely achievement of the required qualifications, successful completion of a personality test and essay questions will be required.
Whilst I appreciate that integration into a team is required and this is suited to some personalities more than others, I don't think you can get a good impression of someone and how they would actually fit in without meeting them in person.
Ho hum, I guess that's the way it goes. I can but hope my personality fits.
