Supermarine actually did have a turret fighter design at the time they were designing the prototype Spitfire. The Type 305 was basically the Spit design with a turret. The RAF went with the Defiant and it never got off the drawing board which probably saved Supermarine some embarrassment seeing how well turret fighter concept worked out.
