Rear Admiral Amjad Hussain CB is an eminently qualified naval weapons engineering officer with an exemplary track record and a thoroughly good egg. As Controller of the Navy, he is the Admiralty Board member responsible for delivering the best affordable technical solutions for all RN ship, submarine, equipment and system projects, not just the poisoned chalice that is CVF. His team includes people with operational experience and knowledge, including FAA specialists, and he doesn't need to be a Ted Anson to do his job properly. In fact, I doubt Ted Anson (or any other FAA non-engineer) could have done it as well.

I thought he answered the overbearing Margaret Hodge's questions (didn't she like the sound of her own voice?) with extraordinary patience and candour. When she demanded absolute answers to simplistic questions, he didn't try to BS but admitted where further study was needed to assess relative risks and make the appropriate decisions. As he remarked, the CVF project is as complex as the organisation of the 2012 Olympics but it was like watching someone trying to explain Einstein's theory of relativity to a difficult five-year old.
