Nervous SLF you don't say which airline is alledged to have treated you in this way, Not BA by any chance is it?
Even if it isn't you have access to somebody who has worked for 35 years as a CC/CSD and union official as well at that airline. He is a "good and honest sort" apparently (you said it) so you would have been able to trust him to answer your rather trivial concerns, wouldn't you?
BTW "nervous SLF" usually worry about bits falling off the plane and strange noises not being called by an incorrect name or their catering/image in business class. They also are too nervous to know/care about free upgrades as well.
