All attidude indicators should have been functional all the time and are the only hope to survive hand flying at night over ocean with partial panel. With the turbulence, roll and falling sensations vertigo had definitely set in. You can't fly by the pants over the ocean at night in a thunderstorm. The pilots had a mostly blue attidude indicatior in front of them, with ROD unwinding like hell. With all electrics operational inertial systems are very reliable.
