FFR and B7, you both been around these places to understand each other malcontent and probably sharing it on pprune is one way to coupe with it!

Spam you've got a point!
EU/UK is a bit different from Qatar on what they expect us to do in term of CDA, noise reduction/abatement and other technique and/or procedure! ... but comparing the two reality is technically not fare.

Now, 15NM out of NAJMA it's a little bit conservative (unless ATC or anything else required you to be level 15NM out)!

Don't get me started on the people that think you need to be level at najma 2000ft.
Or say that V/S stand for Very Stupid and should never be used
Correct, we do no have to be level at 2000ft at NAJMA (it is not a hard altitude) but if we aren't level at NAJMA, we are in one of the following situations then
  1. we intercepted the G/S further out of 6.1DME IBD and we are in great shape (the only concern is that we might have intercepted a false G/S signal, but if we've identified the ILS and performed altitude x-check at 2000 ft, we are perfect). Ideal!
  2. we are above the G/S (shouldn't if we performed a V/NAV PATH descent, but **** happened!). Now we have to press V/S to get back on the G/S. Nowadays, according to Mr.boeing technique, it is not an 'elegant' way to intercept an ILS . Why? Because it all depends on how high we are above the G/S. In V/S mode, although we had selected the speed on speed window the plane will keep the VVI constant (the one selected on the MCP). In this situation, with idle power and the boards out the only way the keep the plane from accelerating is to add more drag by lowering the gear before flaps. And again, it depends how high we are, we need to fight to be in LND configuration by 1000ft. If we are skilled and lucky enough, we saved the app but very close to GA.
  3. we are below the G/S. If between 1500ft and 2000ft, just climb back into the G/S. If below 1500ft (below MSA) a GA would be a solution.
Probably 4 to 5nm out of NAJMA would put us in a good position to see the G/S becoming alive in order to follow our normal configuration sequence without having to fight with our ego (especially after 14h flight).
Fuel consumption, noise and CO2 emission are reduced. We fly safer and green, with lots of happy l-endings!
