CASA really are there to help you and will go out of their way to make the process as smooth and simple as possible. You shouldn't have to wait very long (maybe 2 weeks if your paperwork is mostly in check, they will usually let a few things slide to help you get started) as they are a very efficiently run Government Department, certainly one of the better public service arms in Australia.
