Britannia to Auckland ?

In late 80s, my brother flew Luton to Auckland. Ir was very cheap at the time, very long (30 hours +) & I seem to recall it was on a B757.
1) Am I correct in my recollection ?
2) If so, does anybody out there know what route that the a/c would have taken ? I think it was via Athens, East Africa etc.
Could anybody please provide more info ?
