only infallible method I know:
1. choose flight that is overbooked / delayed / otherwise already in trouble.
2. find PAX who has seriously lost his rag with check-in desk as a result of (1) above. check in immediately behind him.
3. smile sweetly as you check in.
never fails. ticket price paid (as always with upgrades) totally irrelevant.
