This will happen, just look at what has been going on:
A330 based in SIN and it is said that J* wants to branch out from there,
A330 positions advertised for an AKL basing for a rolling 12 month contract,
Qantas looking to pull out of SFO due to the fact that there 'isn't enough of a business market and it is more a leisure route'
Rumour from a good 12 months ago that SIN - AKL - SFO - JFK and SIN - FCO or SIN - ATH were routes that would be launched in anticipation of the 787 coming on line, that has been delayed as have these routes, but I would expect that they will start being talked about again once the 787 dates firm up.
