Many, many years ago before one had to run the EK/Stasi gauntlet before upgrading, one merely waited one's seniority turn until a beautiful gold-tinged letter appeared in one's mail inviting one to upgrade.
Standing by the ops center pilot mailboxes one day, a colleague standing alongside shouted "got my upgrade letter!" He ripped it open and indeed found a lovely embossed letter from the company which said "Dear xxxxx, thank-you for your interest in Emirates but we cannot offer you a position with Emirates at this time".
Not only had he been with the company 5 years at that point, the letter was mailed to him using his Emirates address. He has it framed above his bar now - nice conversation piece when the topic turns to Emirates' efficiencies.
