I did this for real for 40 Hrs of long VFR xcountry in a plane (not my own) last year where the compass went AWOL, setting the DI every 10 min off the GPS allowing for percieved drift. After a while I forgot the compass even existed.

I think the typical GA compass provides an ideal platform for velcroing a standby GPS onto.
