Sky had a jerno straming live pictures from his ground floor hotel room facing south in Bowen. Yes the wind was ripping past quite nicely at what I observed to be 35 to 40 kts but I've lived in QLD by the beach in High Rise buildings and believe me they "funnel" the wind and make it seem a lot worse than it really is.
The studio commentator commented that the wind out his window was 160km/h!!

Another Jerno reporting from CNS around midnight (when the EYE was just crossing the coast around Dunk ) that "when the Eye Passes CNS watch out, there'll be 1 hour of calm before the winds blast back the other way".....

Mel on Sunrise was Twittering all night about the devastating winds whistling around her hotel room in CNS, moments of terror when the noise stopped and she thought they were in the EYE!! If she's bothered to check the BOM CNS WX Radar picture she'd have seen the EYE was way down south of CNS.
If she'd bothered to check the BOM CNS winds she's have known the winds weren't that bad.,

SKY news were repeatedly showing looped SAT images from 20,000 miles away of the Cyclone approaching the coast ( as were CH 7 ) whilst totally ignoring the much better, larger scale more updated BOM CNS Radar. The storm had crossed the coast at 1200, around 5 minutes before they knew. I rang them and suggested they might like to show the Radar as was told to Fark off......we know what were doing!! Yeah I'm sure you do young lady.

Maybe if they were really interested in keeping people up to date they would have shown the CNS Radar live with an expert there to tell them exactly where the EYE is and where its going........Now that might have been useful.
