Fun with gyros

Gyros...opposite to humans; with us, the faster our heads spin grappling with the laws of precession and rigidity, the more wobbly we get!

Big source of confusion for some is the difference between the information provided by the turn co-ordinator (rate of turn) and the attitude indicator (pitch and angle of bank). It's all to do with the number of gimbals, unless you have mercury switches; over to you BEagle!

Then there's the latitude nut....to precess the directional gyro opposite to earth's rotation and minimise apparent wander, but only works at one latitude, often different to the latitude you are flying at so pretty useless.

Lots of examples of gyros other than instruments that can illustrate their properties, the gyro effect when raising the tail in a tailwheel aircraft for example, bicycles being more stable the faster they go, and next time your washing machine is on "spin" and starts leaping round the laundry, try pushing it back against the wall and see which way it goes!
