Reports are saying that only the mother and son of this family (above) could be winched to safety and that the father is missing:

They also say that the family were filmed by several news helicopters. Over the years I have read (and watched) when news helicopters take direct action in order to preserve life.
Is there a general rule among ENG pilots about this and what and when are the exceptions please?
