May be better training that one would think: It is one way to encourage someone to actually look at evertyhing in the cocpit rather than focus on just the interesting bits.

One the other hand there is a long tradition when it comes to trainees, the mechanic/tradesmen equivalent is the sending the eager newcomer to the store in search of the mythical "left handed monkey wrench". At least in the good old days each store owner was well aware of the practice and would senf the victim on to the next store.
