And the last 2 posts (assuming I get this in quick) show why the service and the company, whilst (probably) often sharing the same basic aim, end up worlds apart due to a lack of understanding of what the other is on about.
The company, being a PLC, should indeed be aiming at maximising the share price (not necessarily the same as making profits, but often the two go hand in hand), to maximise return to the owners...ie the shareholders. A good engineer will indeed identify with their work, and will find it hard to believe that anybody else could have a closer relationship with it, or a greater desire to see it work as well as it can.
Which all fades to nothing when you are at 5000 ft, 20 miles from an enemy DDG, and the 'stealth mode' knob falls off.
It's like Turkeys and Reindeer at Christmas, frankly - the Reindeer are determined to provide a good service, but the turkey is REALLY COMMITTED.
