BAE Systems to cut 1,300 jobs following Government's defence review
BAE Systems, the defence group, will on Thursday announce that it is cutting around 1,300 jobs in the UK as a direct result of the Government’s recent defence review.
The job losses will be spread across a number of sites where the Nimrod spy planes and Harrier jets were assembled. Both aircraft were scrapped as part of the Government’s Strategic Defence and Security Review in the autumn.
In October the Government announced that the UK’s defence budget was to be cut by 8pc over the next four years. The move prompted experts to warn that the UK defence industry faces a “long period of continuous pressure”.
A spokesman for BAE would not comment on the cuts. However, he said: “We continually review activities across all our businesses as part of our normal business planning process and reviewing the impact of the SDSR is no different. If these reviews raise any issues that directly affect our employees then our policy is to communicate with our employees through our normal channels.” ....
