We found a way though to do it on the cheap:
I found a good way to get to Bali cheaper ex KTA :
Airnorth to Darwin (via Broome) $325
Air Asia Darwin to Bali $169
Was going to cost about $800 going via Perth
The connection time isn't great, into Darwin at 2140 and out at 0445 the next morning, but maybe the Discovery nightclub will be open...
