Back then, some of the new ones Don was selling had Airconditioning. Had the flap underfloor, parallel to the fuselage that when opened, slowed the little Cherokees down about 12 knots. Ahhhh, but the Cool Air was Great... Didn't get to use those new ones much in Rocky's summer heat though, usually had the older bangers loaded to the hilt with papers for Mackay, or people, taxied out with the tail almost dragging on the bitumen, and after rotation, gained altitude only due to the curvature of the Earth. Would cross the coast at Emu Park at 3,000, after going via either the South Berseker, or the North Berseker points, so as in the event of an 'Unmentionable Event' we could at least glide to the Island or back to the coast. Sometimes cross hired Kieth Barlows old 6 CHT from his subsidiary company Overland Air, that he mainly used for buffel seeding. That was a 'roughie'... Jimmie Stewart was there in those days, but not long after he retired to go flying the Commanche for someone on their property. Max Conrad ferried the Tartrus Robertson STOL Twin Commanche in, and I met him briefly.
