Aero engines are expensive because:

1 - of lawyers and the illogic of joint and several liability
2 - the extremely low production volumes
3 - because they can be.

The aero engne industry could learn a lot from the automotive sector if it weren't for the scoundrel lawyers getting in the way of progress!
