Fred, I will give this a go in the morning. Though I am pretty sure nobody at the airline will want to take the liability to do such a deed - have seen people in the past go though it. I'll give the CP a call about it.
Just on the other hand - will it be a TOTAL NO-NO if I can't get anything from them? I mean, I do have everything stamped (and will be signed) from my current airline.
I rather have the letter (from the US airline) but can't bank on it.
