I was told the cabin crew can treat you like you are a cadet, irrespective of your background (as can a couple of the trainers)
Time traveller, there maybe a grain of truth wrt the cabin crew. I have found most do not know the requiremnets to get the 3rd stripe (4 years). Some of the trainers are 2 stripe, so I doubt the second part of your quote.
