NEW YORK (AP) -- An engine fire forced an Iberia Airlines 747 jet to return to John F. Kennedy Airport on Sunday shortly after takeoff, authorities said.
Pilots turned the plane around when a fire warning light came on, said Arlene Salac, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration.
All 386 passengers and crew were evacuated from the Madrid-bound plane after it landed on the runway at about 7:20 p.m., Salac said.
Five people were taken to Jamaica Hospital with injuries sustained in the evacuation, according to hospital spokeswoman Tara Fleming. She said a 56-year-old man with a head injury was in serious condition, and a 60-year-old woman who briefly lost consciousness was admitted for observation.
The remaining three patients were likely to be treated and released, Fleming said.
Passenger Georg Hutter, of Vienna, Austria, said he was seated at the back of the jetliner and saw smoke and flames through the window.
"While he was taking off, it was all smoke. We saw it from the passenger compartment," Hutter said. "The engine was taking more fire, the flames were coming more and more."
Salac said the fire was contained to the engine.
