I used to spend a lot of time around politicians, and I learned a great deal. One of the key things I learned is that allegations of sexual, family or personal financial misdemeanours rarely come from the opposition

Basically, if we were to get at them like that the tacit ceasefire would be over and they'd find something on one of ours. Sooner or later, somewhere or other. Not worth the risk. Much better that we just commiserate with each other over a drink.

Actual real criminal corruption is another matter. But again you're right that it's less likely to come from the opposition - if one of my colleagues were found to be corrupt we'd shop them as quick as we could, as we believe this would do slightly less damage than keeping quiet and waiting for the opposition to shop them.
