Keef, thanks for your suggestion:
"Remove backup battery, wait ten minutes (cup of coffee, etc), then replace all and try again."
Tried that, didn't work, but then left everything disconnected for a week. Was just about to order a new unit today but thought I should have one last try before I did ... unit appears to be working fine now
