Yes - the call to the Windows partition obviously changed and once that was sorted 'you'd never have known'
Initially the partition allocation ( I have a few.....!) looked haywire in the MiniXP Disk manager - letters all over the place, and I had to look at the folder contents to establish the OS boot partition required - but once boot.ini was sorted and I rebooted successfully it all settled down. Is the HAL rewritten at this point? (asked in blissful ignorance
