You need more than Safety Enhancements to sell Red Bull as a spectator sport

Having watched two Red Bulls, I'm of the opinion that underwing paint-guns and attacks on spectators with cannister-droppable dye-filled water balloons would enhance the experience by introducing some audience participation.

Some ack-ack on the spectator craft would accord the pilots some incentive and sort the men from the boys. To level the playing field, it could be argued that aircraft attacks on spectator water-craft could also be permissible. For the night series you could issue the "onshore" and "at sea" crowd with green laser-pointers and high power xenon searchlights.

Instead of a winner, you could just "graduate the survivors". The whole concept needs some marketing development along the lines of the few enhancements suggested above. The Australian public prefer blood sports and "real" TV series, so it should go down well in a more survivalist format.

CASA could contribute by issuing random noise level infringements to the pilot participants and launching prosecutions against the non-survivors.

And what's with the air-filled collapsible pylons? Make at least one or two of them undetectably lethal with some wing-shredding internal steel hawsers. It's these little garish touches that add that "thrill the spectator" element that's so important for crowd appeal in auto and motor-bike racing. Just because it's an aerial spectacle shouldn't mean that we can't have the odd crispy critter outcome.
