storm clouds, clear air

the other day I was returning [as a passenger] from a holiday, from Bodrum international in turkey with thomson to exeter airport in England.
The captain said to keep seatbelts tight when in your seats because on the way to turkey there were storm clouds and heavy turbulence over the Alps, he said "however it is very likely these clouds have dissipated now because it has been 6 hours and radar shows no signs of thick storm clouds on route." When we reached the Alps we experienced clear air turbulence which was very heavy and felt dangerous. The pilot said this was not foreseen and was un-expected. Could this burst of clear air turbulence [which lasted 20 minutes] and the storm clouds be related? thanks in advance
