It is indeed the Davis D-1-W shown here at Rhinbeck (I think.)



The Roman god and insect clue was probably too obscure, but it refers to the Vulcan Moth, a design from the Vulcan aircraft company, which Davis bought. Apparently, Davis modified the Vulcan Moth (I believe he added the elegant elliptical wing trailing edges, etc) and called it the Davis Monoplane.

From what I could uncover online, although the total production was only sixty aircraft, there were several variants. Eleven of those were D-1-Ks and, later, eight of those D-1-Ks were further modified to become D-1-Ws. I do not know, but I suspect, that the main difference was the engines installed.
