There is only one person who knows why a return to BK was attempted, and everything else we can postulate here is a guess at best.
I am sure at the time that
he thought the best course of action was BK. And i more than likely would have too. More
facts (cause of initial failure, power available on remaining engine, A/C not having available height/airspeed/power to get off the back of the drag curve) are required before jumping to conclusions.
