As another hardware / software / systems person with 40+ years experience I agree with your post #1707. I have yet to see a complex system that does not contain at least one surprise. Many devices have succumbed to gravity at inconvenient times due to software issues, including F-117, Ariene V, Mars Climate Orbiter, etc. Whether AF447 is another example remains to be seen.
