RR...yes, it was designed to replace the C-45.
but....
SincoTC...you have jumped in again...it is the Beech T-36A. I suspect there may have been variations on the drawing...mine was from a book on Beech aircraft.
The contract awarded to Beech was for 196 aircraft to replace the C-45. However it was cancelled at the last minute shortly before the first of 2 prototypes was due to fly. This appears to be the only picture of what is believed to be a prototype (as opposed to a mock up), and yes the cross member of the tail is much higher up.
