Oddly enough not a heli.....but you have hit on it...a nav trainer.
Engines were indeed PW Wasps. Speed was also a factor.
I am not really sure on the design criteria, however its role was either to carry upto 12 passengers or 3 students plus instructor. Maybe the feeling was to keep the nav students well away from the flight deck?
