modems

Ah Crap.

I have a pcchips MB with onboard modem card in a special slot, which until yesterday was functioning ok.

I had added a slave CDRW to my existing one, which should be unrelated.

I'm now in that mode where this modem may or may not be found in windows 98SE, when it is it is installed on COM4, however if one goes to modems in the control panel, and runs diags, you get the famous "Can't open port" msg.

no device conflicts seen in device manager, I'm tearing my hair out at this point.

(I also seem to have lost the onboard sound, which didn't bother me as much, as i was about to disable it in BIOS and install a SB Audigy which has beeter sound.

anyone care to assist me with the modem? any info needed can be provided.

I'm also considering that it may be hardware failure, but it feels more like a conflict. The sound may be failure. I tried adjusting bios settings, etc, somehow I fail to see how the "virtual port" for this card is created.

I know if it comes down to it, I'll take it back to the dealer and have them look at it, but don't want to lose my data, also, could just say screw it and have a USR PCI modem placed into it and run from there as well, but believe it or not the card it was using gave me 56400 on my phone line, not too shabby.

If I cry a bit , it's because it's been two weeks of reconfiguring this P4 2Ghz from XP to 98SE for other reasons, and was just over getting the CD burning SW to function.
