Kiwis. Proof Taswegians can swim!

Tinpis bought a property in Tasmania. I understand he's tracing his roots.

Ahhh, Tasmania. Half a million people, ten surnames......

Brothers, Merve and Les Gillies were WWII veterans who settled in Goroka and owned a small building company, their final workshop was behind the Pacific Helicopters hangar. "Sparrow" worked with them for many years.

They had great personalities, always good for a joke and a laugh. When I first met them they drank rum and milk and as they couldn't afford a fridge, it was Capt Morgan Rum, Sunshine powdered milk, stir and add water!

I remember Les went to Jack Thick's timber yard near the Teacher's College in Goroka (next door to the Talair Stone Houses) to get some 4 x 2 timber. Les picked over the timber then said to Jack Thick in his slow drawl:

"Jack, you better take this all down to Air Niugini."

"Why is that?" asked Jack.

"It'd make bloody good prepellors" replied Les.

Jack Thick had a couple of ex WWII GMC 6x4 trucks that he and Poppa Raasch used to recover Bobby Gibbes Junkers Ju52 from Wau in the late 50's, after Peter Manser demolished the Qantas Airport office in one of his better Junkers landings.
