I'm not sure if this has been posted but for anyone who is interested in the effect of volcanic ash, the NASA Airborne Sciences Platform aircraft (a converted DC-8 fitted with CFM-56-2 turbofans) inadvertently flew through a volcanic ash cloud in 2000. The full report is here:
