In late 2001 Pentagon officials acknowledged that some of the 2,000 missiles sent to Afghan fighters during the 1980s might have fallen into the hands of Taliban or Al-Qaeda fighters.

Note of explanation to our younger readers: this situation came about due to the U.S. government providing the shoulder-fired heat-seeking missiles to Islamist fighters battling Soviet troops in Afghanistan during the 80's (how times change, eh?!.... see also )

So aside from 'freedom fighters of a certain faith' (is that PC enough for everyone? ) wishing to blow themselves up all over Kabul, as I have no intention of ever leaving the environs of the airport, I'd really much rather know about the risk from surface-to-air missiles being launched in our direction during approach / take-off? Does anybody have any solid info / risk assessment on this?

Also, could someone tell me precisely what damage was inflicted due to the (3x) missiles launched into Kabul airport on 21st March 2010?
